2020 Teen Leadership Conference

Each year, BGCTC hosts a Teen Leadership Conference at the Voyageur Environmental Center where Club teens can identify what leadership is and build their leadership skills, prepare for BGCTC’s Youth of the Year competition, learn how to build confidence and community, and connect with other Club teens and staff in a fun, safe, encouraging environment.

Aside from enjoying the winter activities that Voyageur offers, including ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, teens learned the following skills at the 2020 Teen Leadership Conference: how to effectively communicate as a leader, demonstrate emotional intelligence, practice leadership and communication styles, utilize conflict resolution, and live a healthy lifestyle in the areas of nutrition, sleep, physical activity, stress management, and mental health awareness.

Additionally, Club staff instilled in Club teens the importance of relating to others and representing the values of their community while also having the confidence and ability to reflect on their own life experiences. Club staff embedded reflection into every portion of the Conference days—during workshops, at meals, and in the cabins where teens stayed overnight. Staff even hosted a “Leadership Olympics” where teens won awards for their leadership qualities!

Our goal each year is for Club teens to leave the Teen Leadership Conference feeling refreshed, connected to the Club community, and confident about the new skills they have learned. We are grateful to have a safe place like Voyageur where we can provide positive, restorative experiences for Club youth!
