The Great Futures Fair seeks to connect passion with purpose. Teens and young adults from across the Twin Cities will have the opportunity to meet with local corporations, businesses, colleges, tech schools, and trade unions as they begin to plan their post-secondary paths. The fair will educate and expose teens to the multitude of employment and educational opportunities that exist across the metro area and allow prospective employers and educators to interact first-hand with the next generation of employees and students.
Guest Speaker: Manny Villafaña
We are honored to be joined at this event by renowned entrepreneur, medical device developer, and philanthropist Manny Villafaña.
After beginning his career with the medical device exporter Picker International, Villafaña joined Medtronic in 1967 and became the company’s first international sales administrator. In the early 1970s, he founded Cardiac Pacemakers Inc, which pioneered the first lithium-powered pacemakers and defibrillators—technology that is incorporated into virtually every pacemaker and defibrillator on the market. In 1976, he established St. Jude Medical Inc., which developed a mechanical heart valve which is now the most commonly used prosthesis in the world.
Villafaña continues his work in revolutionizing cardiac surgery. His most recent effort, the development of an artificial artery at Medical 21, Inc., in Plymouth, MN, promises to eliminate the harvesting of vessels from the patient during bypass CABG surgery.
In addition to his revolutionary contributions to the medical field, Villafaña is known for his generosity as a philanthropist. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in Bronx, NY, where he was a member as a child, and is a long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.
