2019 Youth of the Year
Anaa Jibicho Named Minnesota Youth of the Year
Youth of the Year Competition Made Possible by Toyota Financial Services
On March 19, our Twin Cities Youth of the Year Anaa Jibicho was named the Minnesota Youth of the Year! Anaa has been an active member of our Mt. Airy Club for nine years, and currently serves the Clubs as our Community Outreach intern. As the state winner, Anaa receives a $5,000 check, $12,000 of the Home Team scholarship to go toward his post-secondary education.
Anaa will represent Minnesota at the Midwest Youth of the Year competition in July. We are so proud of his work this far, and wish him luck as he moves on in the Youth of the Year competition!
Becoming Youth of the Year
For more than 70 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year program has honored and celebrated the nation’s most inspiring youth and their incredible stories. Club members who earn the Youth of the Year title embody the values of good character and leadership, academic excellence, and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people across the country.
Becoming the National Youth of the Year is an exciting journey that begins at the local level. Each Club recognizes one stand-out teen member a month to receive the title of Youth of the Month. From the 12 Youth of the Month winners, each local Club selects a Youth of the Year, who is entered into the city-wide competition. At this level of competition, all candidates are required to submit a written application, participate in an interview with a panel of judges, and present a memorized speech. Each city-wide Youth of the Year winner moves on to their State competition. From there, State winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competitions.
Regional winners receive an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Finally, six youth–five regional winners and a military winner–advance to the National Youth of the Year Gala and Celebration Dinner in Washington, D.C. for a chance to win an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable up to $100,000 over four years. The National Youth of the Year serves as an ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as a voice for the nearly 4 million youth served by Clubs nationwide each year.
Who Makes Youth of the Year Possible
The Youth of the Year recognition program is presented by The Walt Disney Company, who has supported Boys & Girls Clubs of America for more than 50 years, empowering young people to reach their full potential and providing youth with access to the tools they need to build the great futures they imagine. Toyota is the Signature Sponsor of the national Youth of the Year program.
We are grateful to Toyota Financial Services for making the 2019 Twin Cities Youth of the Year competition, as well as countless other events throughout the year, possible for our youth. TFS volunteers completed several service projects for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities in 2018, including handing out school supplies and backpacks to Club members, preparing and serving Thanksgiving dinner at our Southside Village Club, donating supplies for our Kids Can Give Holiday Sale, and coaching Youth of the Year candidates on their memorized speeches.
